Description
Ma Xing Zhi Ke Pian
are powerful herbal pills
that treat cough, bronchitis and asthma. Although this formula is used mostly to
treat bronchitis with yellow phlegm due to heat, it is also quite
effective in mild cases of asthma.
The results of herbal
therapy range from a complete remission of the disease to a much less frequent
use of inhalers. Ma Xing Zhi Ke Pian
can also be used for cough due to heat, with sore throat, dry
loud cough, or swollen glands.
This formula is a modification of the formula, Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang, which
is one of the most popular formulas for cough and asthma from the
classical Chinese Medicine text, Shang Han Lun, by Zhang Zhongjing,
219 A.D., Han Dynasty.
Warning: If the patient has high blood pressure, use this carefully and use only
the normal dose. The formula contains Ma Huang, Chinese Ephedra,
which can increase blood pressure. |

Effect of ma-xin-shi-gan tang on the immune function in children
with acute lower respiratory tract infection
Yue Q, Ni ZY. Affiliated Hospital of Hubei College of TCM, Wuhan.
This paper reported the effect of Ma-Xin-Shi-Gan tang (Decoction of
Herba Ephedrae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Radix Glycyrrhizae and
Gypsum Fibrosum) on the immune function of the children with acute
lower respiratory tract infection (ALRTI). 64 cases of ALRTI
children were chosen for clinical observation. Laboratory researches
including 7 immune indexes: blood OKT3+ cell, OKT4+ cell, OKT8+ cell
and OKT4+/OKT8+ cell ratio, serum IgG, IgA, IgM. Some tests in
experimental mice were also made. The results showed: (1) Before
treatment, the blood OKT3+ cell, OKT4+ cell and OKT4+/OKT8+ cell
ratio of the ALRTI children were lower, OKT8+ cell was higher than
that of the normal group, which indicated lowered function of cell
mediated immunity (CMI) in ALRTI children. Furthermore, IgM content
in serum of the ALRTI children was significantly higher than that of
the normal group, which indicated a hyperhumoral immunity (HI). (2)
Blood OKT4+ cell and OKT4+/OKT8+ cell ratio in children after
treatment with the Decoction were higher than those before
treatment, which suggested the Decoction can regulate the cell ratio
of OKT4+ and OKT8+, and relieve the functional inhibition of CMI in
ALRTI children, while comparing with the western medicine (WM)
group, the blood OKT3+ cell, OKT4+ cell and serum IgG content in the
Decoction group after treatment were higher. In the WM group, the
serum IgG and IgA contents were lower than those of the normal
group, which indicated inhibited function of HI after treatment. (3)
In experimental mice, the Decoction can increase the phagocytic
index of the macrophage, the spleen index and the level of serum
hemolysin. It can also enhance the skin delayed allergic reaction of
the mice.
The effects of Ma-Xing-Gan-Shi-Tang on respiratory resistance and

Abstract: Ma-Xing-Gan-Shi-Tang (MXGST), a traditional Chinese
medicine, has been used in treatment of the bronchial asthma for
several centuries. However, the therapeutic mechanisms of this
Chinese medicine are still far from clear. To understand the
mechanism of anti-asthmatic property of MXGST, a guinea pig model of
allergic asthma was used to investigate the effects of MXGST on
Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus-induced early and late asthmatic
responses and airway inflammation, and examine direct
beta2-adrenoceptor agonist activity in guinea-pig isolated trachea.
Administration of MXGST (10 g/kg) extracts significantly inhibited
the antigen induced immediate asthmatic responses (IAR) in actively
sensitized guinea pig. MXGST caused concentration-dependent
relaxation in strips of guinea pig trachea contracted with carbachol,
and ICI-118551, a selective beta2-adrenoceptor antagonist,
significantly inhibit the relaxation caused by MXGST. Furthermore,
examination of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) revealed that
MXGST significantly inhibited the increase in neutrophil in the
airway at 1, 6 and 24 hr after antigen challenge. Histopathologic
examination results showed that MXGST suppressed the neutrophil
infiltration into lung tissue. In conclusion, we suggest that the
anti-asthmatic effects of MXGST are mainly due to its stimulation of
beta2-adrenoceptors on bronchial smooth muscle and its
anti-inflammatory ability to inhibit the neutrophil into the airway.
The precise mechanism of action of MXGST in asthma remains to be
elucidated.
